Project Noah week11

PROJECT NOAH-MARCH WEEK #11 Purchase Items 1. 8 cans of pineapple or mandarins 2. Large bag/box of rice 3. Maple or boysenberry syrup Activity (FHE or Saturday) Time to start planning for a vegetable garden. Identify a sunny location, start clearing weeds, rocks, etc. and work in some form of good soil and fertilizer, or consider building grow boxes. (See pgs. 2-4 in Essentials of Home Production & Storage for tips or look in Sunset’s Western Garden Book) Wheat Tip Home Storage—Regardless of the type of storage container selected, grain should be stored in materials approved for food storage. Many plastic bags, some plastic buckets or cans, some metal buckets or cans are suitable for storage of dry grain. However, some plastic materials have an odor that can be transferred to the wheat stored in them. Some metal containers are lined with plastic that can also impart an odor or flavor to the wheat. Plastic garbage bags are not suitable for food storage unless the label on the container so specifies. WHAT TO DO WITH WHEAT? Wheat is a cheap and nutritious part of our food storage and can be a way to have fresh flour if food is scarce. If we are familiar with using it in our cooking now, it will be natural to use it if we have to. Electric grinders are available and usually cost about $200.00. Hand cranks are a cheaper option and good for emergencies. Two options for “cracking” wheat are a blender and a coffee grinder. They will not produce fine flour for baking, put will make a mix of coarse flour and small pieces, which can be made into a fiber and vitamin filled hot cereal. Both whole wheat and cracked wheat cereal are extremely filling! RECIPE-CRACKED WHEAT CEREAL 1 cup cracked wheat 2 1/2 cups water 1/2 tsp. salt Bring to a boil. Cook covered on low for 10 to 20 minutes. If tightly covered, can be stored in frig up to 2 weeks. Add white or brown sugar, honey, syrup, spices, raisins, nuts or berries if desired.
