Project Noah Week #10

PROJECT NOAH-MARCH WEEK #10 Purchase Items 1. Large package of toilet paper 2. 8 cans of a vegetable your family WILL EAT 3. A hand-operated can opener Activity (FHE or Saturday) Check your current water supply. Has your water been sitting more than 6 months? Are your bottles of water sealed tightly? Do you need to add water? Water Tip If necessary, treat water with a chlorine bleach solution prior to storage to prevent buildup of harmful bacteria or pathogens. Replace water every six months. If your water is treated commercially by a water utility, it is not necessary to treat water before storing it. If you have a well or public water that has not been treated, disinfect the water prior to storage using liquid household bleach containing 5.25 percent sodium hypochlorite. Do not use scented or color-safe bleaches or bleaches containing soaps. Water Purifying with Household Bleach The American Red Cross and the U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency recommend the following procedure for treating water for storage: • Add six drops (1/8 teaspoon) of unscented bleach per gallon of water. • Stir and let stand for 30 minutes. • If the water does not taste and smell of chlorine after 30 minutes, add another dose of 1/8 teaspoon and let stand another 15 minutes. • Seal the containers and label with contents and date of preparation. RECIPE OATMEAL RAISIN MUFFINS 1 egg 3 tsp. baking powder 3/4 cup milk 1/2 tsp. salt 1 cup raisins 1/2 tsp. ground nutmeg 1/2 cup vegetable oil 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon 1 cup white/whole wheat flour 1 cup rolled oats 1/3 cup sugar Heat oven to 400. Grease bottoms of about 12 medium muffin cups or line with cupcake liners. Beat egg, stir in milk, raisins and oil. Stir in remaining ingredients all at once just until flour is moistened (batter will be lumpy). Fill muffin cups about 3/4 full. Bake in preheated oven until golden brown, about 20 minutes. Remove from pan immediately. Note: If using regular oats instead of quick oats, soak in water for 5 minutes to soften them.
